Katie's First Dentist Appointment

Katie had her very first dentist appointment today, September 29, 2009, at 10:00 am.  I was a little nervous about how it would go down considering how much her daddy LOVES dental visits. But, after some daily coaxing leading up to the appointment, telling her how cool the chair would be and how awesome it would be to get a new toothbrush, etc., she was willing to give it a try.

We walked into the office, a little confused by the orthodontic side and pediatric side, and signed ourselves in.  Katie raced over to the fish tank and was super excited to show me the giant red fish that was hiding in the corner of the tank.  There was a little confusion with our paperwork because I have pregnancy brain and had written down two different social security numbers for Jimmy.  After I finally got a hold of him and made the correction, they were ready to see Little Miss Katie.

She was a champ and went into the office all by herself!  I was kind of sad about that, but felt sure she'd be good for everyone.  Indeed, she was excellent according to the turbo fox of a dentist.  (Of course, he probably could have said all her teeth were rotten and I would have completely missed it!)  The dentist said she had NO cavities, phew!, and everything looks great. She does take after her pops though and has one front tooth that is actually two smooshed into one.  He said he didn't x-ray it because it's common for there to be only one root for those "two" teeth...  I guess we'll see as time goes by.  He also said we'll have to kick the thumb sucking before age 5 as her front teeth are poking out a wee bit...  not likely though...  I was still sucking my thumb way past then!

I'm so proud of Chatty Kathy!  I guess all that talking hasn't hurt her teeth much! Apparently, it's when she's quiet (sucking her thumb) that's the problem.  Go figure!

Another milestone for Katie Bear...

Wounded

On Sunday morning, Jimmy and I decided not to attend church so we could instead be lazy on our 6-year wedding anniversary.  I mean, we didn't buy each other cards or gifts or even plan a big dinner, so why change it up with a family outing so early in the morning, right?

Jimmy surfed the internet while I entertained Katie on the floor of the bonus room.  Maggie was napping.  We were being silly, very silly.  I was tickling her. As she lay on the ground, I took both of her hands, held them over her head, and tickled her armpits.  I can honestly say that I did not feel like I was greatly overpowering her.  I feel sure I was hardly holding her hands.  But, she must have jerked her arms away, injuring her right wrist.  OH! THE SQUEALING that followed!

Katie cried and cried and whined and whined about the pain.  OH! THE PAIN!  I played doctor for all of 5 minutes to see if she could move her elbow, fingers, wrist, etc.  Everything seemed workable except for when she rotated her wrist. I became nervous that I may have fractured something in there.  I think Jimmy was in disbelief, too, but we nurtured the wounded as best we could.

I wrapped her wrist in left over gauze from Jimmy's burn injury years ago and added a small ice pack in case of swelling.  Katie said in her most pitiful voice, "Thank you, Dr. Mommy."  She rested/vegged out in front of the TV for a little while, but the pain, OH! THE PAIN! was so intense she just kept whining. Later, Jimmy rewrapped the "wound" and repositioned a new ice pack. Once again, Katie said in her most pitiful voice, "Thank you, Dr. Daddy."

It was a long day of helpless Katie on the couch with her arm propped up on a pillow.  She couldn't get to the kitchen table by herself.  She couldn't go to the bathroom by herself.  After we helped her on the pot, she threw her head back with such fatigue and said with a sigh, "Ahh, I'm done.  Wipe me."

It was an even longer night as I was the one getting up with her each of the THREE times she awoke whimpering.  Every time I tried to get her to go back to sleep, she would constantly talk over me saying, "Shhh, Mommy, you need to listen to me.  Sometimes kids get boo-boos inside their bodies."

Finally, morning came and she still complained of the pain.  I had a doctor's appointment, so Jimmy thought he might need to stay home and take Katie to the doctor himself.  They couldn't see her until 1pm, so he left for work and I planned to take her after my appointment.  Katie stayed at the Langworthy's house during my appointment.  I made sure to tell my friend (also named Katie) to keep an eye out for Katie's range of motion...  I suspected faking as she used her bum wrist to get into the car without incident!

Sure enough, my friend reported faking.  I canceled the appointment and the nurse laughed at me when I told her Katie was acting completely fine now.  I was nervous to cause a scene when I tried to remove the bandage, but Katie was excited to have it off...  "I can run again, I can jump again.  I'm all fixed! My wrist can talk again!"  (I don't understand that last one!)

I wish I had more video of the drama queen's moans and groans!  Serious Oscar potential!!!

Updates

Maggie had her 9 month check up and is doing marvelously.  She is 17.5 lbs., which is the 25th percentile.  People all over the place tell me, "She's a big girl!"  At lunch one afternoon, an older man told us she had arms like a football player!  Really?  She's not that big!  Her length is 27.5", which is the 50th percentile. Her head is 17", which is the 25th percentile.  We thought she had thinned out some, but now we have proof.  She's not a huge eater, but when she does eat, she's willing to try anything.

Maggie is so easy going, which is a huge help for me.  Even though she is crawling everywhere and pulling up on furniture, she doesn't really get into much mischief, yet.  It's Katie we have to watch, leaving all her little "tinies" everywhere.  We've eliminated all the rocks in the house (Katie is a major rock collector) after I found a rock in Maggie's mouth!  I knew it would happen eventually, but I guess I had to learn the hard way before getting rid of them! However, no permanent damage was done.

Katie is taking swim lessons this week and next at the YMCA, Monday through Thursday from 5:50 pm - 6:30 pm.  Her class is small, only 4 kids, so that is really nice.  Of course, Katie is the only girl!  Here is a video of her actually listening to the instructor, Mrs. Elizabeth.

The girls are having lots of fun this summer hanging out at the pool and playing with their friends. Naps are becoming an issue for Katie, but hopefully when the schedule is a little more routine in the fall, she'll be back to normal.  If not, then we just cut them completely and institute some "quiet time."  If that's even possible for chatty Kathy!

Trip to BJ's.

Fun at our friend's community pool in Clayton.

Swinging at the park.
